This actress worked in Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu cinema in the 1980s and 1990s. She was considered the most iconic sex symbol and ruled millions of hearts with her aura. Can you guess who it is? We are talking about Silk Smitha who featured in over 450 films and became an overnight sensation. Her breakthrough came with the 1979 Tamil film Vandichakkaram and she got the screen name ‘Silk’. Well, her dance numbers set the temperature soaring and guaranteed a blockbuster hit. Silk Smitha who was born Vijaylakshmi Vadlapati in Andhra Pradesh’s Eluru in 1960. She was a school dropout due to her family’s condition and her parents forced her to marry a local boy when she was a teenager. From a touch-up artist to actress Aparna, she started getting minor roles as an extra. Vinu Chakravarthy mentored her and taught her Tamil, dance. She got Vandichakkaram. On September 23, 1996, Smitha was found dead at her apartment in Chennai after reports claimed that she committed suicide. Well, the exact reason is not known as of now. If reports are to be believed then, Silk was battling multiple problems as depression, disillusionment in love and more. A biopic on life of Silk Smitha was officially announced and it was titled Silk Smitha: Queen of the South. The film starred Chandrika Ravi in the lead role. Later, Vidya Balan played Silk Smitha in the film The Dirty Picture in 2011.
