Kym Marsh has left fans in awe after revealing her “real name” during a friendly chat with a fellow soap star.

The star first rose to fame in 2001 on ITV’s hit talent show Popstars, which led to her joining the chart-topping band Hear’Say.

Despite initial popularity, public sentiment towards Hear’Say quickly turned negative, leading to the band members being shunned by the nation.

However, the 48-year-old singer and actress managed to win back the hearts of the public five years later when she secured the role of Michelle Connor in ITV’s Coronation Street.

On Tuesday, Kym appeared on the Morning with Chloe Rivers radio show on Suffolk Sound for an interview.

To her delight, instead of Chloe Rivers, she was reunited with friend and fellow soap star Michael Greco, best known for his role as Beppe di Marco on EastEnders from 1998 to 2002.

During the show, Kym shared some surprising anecdotes about her life, including her real name. She disclosed: “I was Kimberly with an I from birth, but I changed my name as I decided it was really boring.”

“I changed it to Kym with a ‘y’ because I thought it was really cool. It took my dad about 10 years to start writing my name with a y.”

The star also revealed some secrets about her time on the Cobbles, as per the Mirror.

Reflecting on her start in the world-famous Corrie back in 2006, Kym Marsh shared: “I was only supposed to be in Coronation Street for four episodes, I didn’t even have a surname, I was just Michelle. I later got a permanent place and the surname Connor.”

Recounting her initial days on set, she expressed her awe at meeting iconic cast members, saying: “When I first started I was in the green room and walked past Bill Roache and in my head was like ‘Oh my God, it’s Ken Barlow!’ Beverley Callard (who played Liz McDonald) was so lovely. She really took me under her wing and made me feel really at ease.”

Kym sensationally quit Coronation Street in 2019 – leaving her free to pursue other roles. In 2022 she was a contestant on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing where she was paired with Graziano Di Prima – and they managed to survive 11 weeks before they were booted from the contest in the quarter finals.

Since 2023, Kym has been portraying Nicky Walters in the revived BBC school drama Waterloo Road, playing a pivotal role as a canteen worker and mother to Preston and Tonya. Her character finds love with Donte Charles, interpreted by Adam Thomas—best known for his tenure as Adam Barton in Emmerdale from 2009 to 2018.

Last month, Michael spilled the beans on whether his return to Albert Square as Beppe could be on the cards for the soap’s 40th anniversary bash. Yet, he revealed Martine McCutcheon – Tiffany Mitchell’s alter-ego who was killed off in 1999 – might have already dashed those hopes.

The 48-year-old once graced the EastEnders set from 1995 before her dramatic exit.

Michael mused: “If Tiffany wasn’t killed off she would probably have gone back to Eastenders, and then they may have asked me back. They are having their 40th anniversary and they have asked a lot of people back but they haven’t asked me back, but that’s OK as my career is heading in a good direction.”
